Samara Paiva

Samara Paiva is a Brazilian artist born in the Amazon region in 1995. After graduating with a degree in architecture in 2019, she began exploring painting as a self-taught artist. In 2020, she began painting professionally and has since focused her practice on exploring the relationship between the body and its familiar environments through her own perspective and experience as an Afro-Brazilian woman.

In Paiva's depictions the central subject are women of Afro-descendant women like herself, operating in domestic and everyday settings. These settings offer the viewer a window into the intimate lives of which we are often unaware. The artist's intention in creating these representations is to humanize the subjects and highlight their most vulnerable aspects: the search for identity, acceptance, a sense of belonging, and, ultimately, the sharing of a type of beauty that does not conform to traditional canon, through acts of intimacy reflected in her works.

Artista
"In our world people have often considered -white- as something good and that which is -black- as something inferior. With my work I try to undermine this pattern that is deep-rooted in society and delve into darkness as something good and worthy"
- Samara Paiva
